One of the greats John Maxwell once said. “Everything rises and falls on leadership. I need to become a better leader.” Today, more than ever, I have decided that in my life leadership is something I must focus on. The purpose for this blog is to provide an avenue for all leaders, especially those that are in high school or college, to read about leadership from someone fairly close in age. I want to be clear and state that I do not claim to know everything about leadership. I mean, I am 24! But I do know this: I am very fortunate and blessed to have had many experiences and opportunities to see and experience leadership done well, and I think it’s important for the generation after me to know the things they need to get right, now! Leadership Matters!
I’m not famous, a millionaire, shoot, I technically don’t even own a car! But I do know and agree with the above quote, everything does rise and fall on leadership. It is crucial for young adults to dive into their own leadership, and own their strengths. My hope is that throughout my posts, young minds can take these thoughts and put them to good use. I, myself, am at the beginning stages of my leadership development, and I will forever be learning. As I post, I want to let you into not only the things I am learning but also my struggles along the way.
Lets first start by defining leadership. Some say leadership comes down to ones influence on others. Others state, leadership is all about being in a position of power. I have met people who think that only people who use suite and ties are leaders! Crazy right?! In this blog, I will not put leadership in a box. I believe whether you are a janitor in a small town, or the CEO of some big company in New York, you have the potential to think and act as a leader. I have had bosses who were horrible and gave terrible advice-- “The goal of college is to party as much as possible. Live it up when you get out then find a wife.” I was 16, what the heck?! I was just scooping ice cream and my boss was telling me stuff like this to me. I have also seen amazing leadership. As I was getting out of the car at the grocery store one day, I had to close my door suddenly because a young woman ran by the car door. She was howling at an elderly lady to leave her cart, “Right there!”. Then she ran to the next cart, and the next one. She was thanking people as they were leaving the grocery store, and I was dumbfounded. This young lady was making everyone's day with her energy. She was the cart collector for the grocery store, and her energy was contagious. She was a leader!
As you can see, leadership comes in many different shapes and sizes. We experience leadership every minute of the day, in every interaction we have. It’s in every one of us. I believe every person has the potential to learn about themselves and tap into their leadership skills. So, if you are reading this and you're thinking yeah I can be a leader, I want to get better at this thing called leadership, then I can't wait to hear about your leadership impact and thanks for reading! If you’re thinking…. this is wack. Then sorry I guess, see ya!
Lets get to leading!
